How to Find Your IP Address on Chromebook
Locate local and public IP addresses for network troubleshooting.
Last verified: February 21, 2026
Chromebook shows the local IP address in two locations: tapping the Wi-Fi icon in the Quick Settings tray shows a brief summary including the IP, and Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > [connected network name] > Network shows the full details including the subnet mask and DNS servers. Chrome OS also exposes network internals at chrome://network-internals/#state, which provides a live view of all network interface states, IP leases, and connection types useful for troubleshooting. For the public IP address (as seen from the internet), simply opening a new Chrome tab and searching "what is my IP" returns it immediately from the active connection.
Quick Steps
Follow in order for the fastest result.
- 1Click the Wi-Fi icon in the system tray and select Network settings to view the currently assigned IP address.
- 2To find your public IP address, open any browser and type: what is my ip address.
- 3Note the local IP (typically 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) for router configuration and port forwarding tasks.
Still Not Working?
Try these if the steps above didn't help.
- If no IP is shown (shows 0.0.0.0 or APIPA 169.254.x.x), follow the Fix Wi-Fi guide to obtain a valid IP assignment.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi if the lease has expired and a new IP has not been assigned.
Verify the Fix
Confirm everything is fully working before closing this guide.
- Confirm the IP is in a valid private range: 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16–172.31.x.x.
- The default gateway listed should be the router IP, typically ending in .1.
